The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is one of those books that immediately hooks you with its premise. A girl with nothing suddenly inherits an unimaginable fortune from a billionaire she has never even met. It sounds like a dream come true, but from the very beginning it is clear that this inheritance comes with strings attached, secrets, and danger.

The story follows Avery Grambs, a teenager who is used to surviving on very little and planning only for the near future. Her life changes overnight when she learns that Tobias Hawthorne, one of the richest men in the world, has left her his entire estate. The problem is that his disinherited family still lives in the enormous, puzzle filled mansion she is now required to move into. They are angry, suspicious, and convinced she must have manipulated their grandfather somehow. Avery is thrown into a world of luxury, hostility, and constant scrutiny, where trusting the wrong person could have serious consequences.

What makes the book so addictive is the nonstop tension. The Hawthorne House is packed with secret passages, riddles, codes, and hidden messages left behind by the eccentric billionaire. Every room seems to conceal another mystery, and every clue raises new questions instead of answers. It creates a strong sense of thrill, almost like being inside an elaborate game where the stakes are constantly rising. There is always something happening, which makes it very easy to keep reading far longer than planned.

The Hawthorne brothers add another layer of intrigue. Each of them has a distinct personality and complicated relationship with both Avery and the inheritance itself. Their dynamics shift constantly between hostility, curiosity, protectiveness, and something else that is harder to define. This creates a subtle romantic tension that runs beneath the mystery without completely taking over the story. It adds emotional stakes, even if the romance never becomes the central focus.

Despite how entertaining the plot is, the book did not fully match my personal taste. I do enjoy mysteries, especially ones with puzzles and mind games, but this story sometimes felt a bit hollow. It prioritizes twists, drama, and spectacle over deeper emotional development. While the characters are interesting and occasionally compelling, I never felt truly attached to them on a deeper level. Some moments that should have felt impactful came across more as dramatic rather than meaningful.

That being said, the pacing is excellent. The chapters are short, sharp, and often end on mini cliffhangers, making the book incredibly easy to binge read. The glamorous setting, the constant suspicion between characters, and the looming question of why Avery was chosen keep the suspense alive from beginning to end.

Overall, The Inheritance Games is a fast paced, highly entertaining mystery filled with wealth, secrets, rivalries, and clever puzzles. It may not be particularly deep, but it delivers excitement and intrigue in abundance. Even though it was not a personal favorite, I cannot deny how gripping it is, and I am definitely curious enough to continue the series to see how everything unfolds.

Three out of five stars.
